How to use it

  1. Choose any garden pieces you want to add, or begin with the empty garden.
  2. Use each piece for something you appreciate, value, hope for, or want to remember.
  3. Leave spaces empty or include stones, weather, and needs alongside growth.
  4. Share only what you choose.

Reflection prompts

  • What was easy, hard, or not possible to add today?
  • What does this garden need from other people or its surroundings?
  • Is there anything you want to keep private?

Facilitator guidance

Avoid requiring gratitude toward people or circumstances, especially where harm, loss, or inequity is present. Validate empty spaces and mixed feelings.

Adaptations & accessibility

  • Use appreciation, importance, hope, or care as interchangeable prompts.
  • Draw directly rather than cutting pieces.
  • Create a shared group garden while allowing private contributions or passing.

Professional-use review

Standard licensed-clinician review required before use; ensure gratitude framing does not minimize pain or create obligation.

This clinician-created resource is published for professional evaluation. Before client use, the treating clinician or other qualified adult must determine whether it is appropriate and complete every specialist, accessibility, safeguarding, and local-policy review named above. Publication does not represent individualized clinical approval.
